it's too hot

I see now how it's going to be. Hundred degree days stretch out before me like an endless, hot, freshly laid gooey black road in a flat, treeless, relentlessly sunny landscape. I'm beginning to believe that I won't experience a day with temperatures in the double digits again until I set foot back in Canada (and not just because in Canada the thermometer doesn't go to a hundred).

august 19 07: day four

I'm trying to get a new piece of clothing made every night to wear the next day and failing miserably, not because I'm not excited about this project or because I don't have the time to sew, but because I drop every article of sewing like a hot potato as soon as I get to the point where it needs to be ironed. I've made two of these gathered skirts and they're easy and painless, just a big tube gathered onto a strip of t-shirt material, but I want to do some more complex, tailored things, professional clothes, shirts with buttons, shapely aprons, pleats, darts. IT'S TOO HOT. Tonight I cut out a charming little surplice top from a vintage pattern (printed in 1970, isn't it odd to be the same age as something that can be called "vintage"?), but when I had all the pieces cut it hit me: facings. Need to be ironed. Bah.

Had to laugh at the category...here I am, a Canadian, about to commiserate about the weather. OK, so Georgia is humid, but we are in monsoon season in Arizona, it was 115 F on my car thermometer yesterday and it's humid to boot! (Haven't said "to boot" in a couple years, felt good.) Love the clothes project, have had one of my own going for several years, mine are based on fabrics I find at Goodwill, no print studio at my disposal, or space at home. Sigh. Keep up the good work.

I hate the sewing ironing in the summer in England, I think I'd pass out if I had to try and do it in temperatures over 75 degrees let alone 100!

I am loving your fabric prints, I don't know if part of your project is to make everything yourself but I wish I was closer so I could whip you up a few things from that fabric, it looks amazing!

Dude, some seriously cool stuff you're doing. I'm with you here, if the weather doesn't break soon, I'm moving to the North Pole.

Unfortunately, the pic I posted is the only one Bob had. He called it the automatic shopper.

"in Canada the thermometer doesn't go to a hundred"

Not even the Fahrenheit versions, or so I understand!

But the Celsius ones go to "Eleven". And that's enough for Canada!

;-)

I just love that photo of you...

This is a brilliant project, dear Jodi. I have enjoyed watching it here and on Flickr. I can totally understand about the iron. I hate ironing... I never do it...

Dude, I am having so much fun watching all the clothes you are making. This is a really cool project. Can you cut yourself some slack and sew a headband/kerchief once in a while? That counts, right?

The clothing is so cool! What a creative idea for an artist.

I loathe ironing and yet I keep buying clothes that need to be ironed. I pull out the ironing board about once a month and turn on some trashy TV show and set to. Sometimes, there are a few things that pile up, ignored. When I get to that pile, it's almost like having new clothes. "Hey, I forgot I had that shirt!"

Oh Jodi, you do my heart good! I'm so proud of you...
and now can I jump in there with Lolly and beg you for a printed kerchief to wear on my head?!?
You know that the last few years, that's been my look ~ loooong braids and a kerchief to hold all the frizzies back.
How's my t-shirt going by the way?
I found you the coolest little piece of kitch today.
Perhaps I'll mail it to you...
Huggs,
~M.
