a tour of our backyard garden
Norma, don't look.
It's clearly a work in progress. That space in the middle that's all tall weeds and meadow flowers is where the patio will be. The asphalt roofing tiles held down by a cinderblock mark the graves of my two kitties, and one day the patio will curve in a kidney shape to cover and protect this spot. Right now it's all a horrendous disaster, but the butterflies and kitties like it just fine.

I think (but might be wrong) that the white thing you weren't sure about might be liatris. Apparently it's also known as gayfeather. It's unusual because the blooms start from the top of the spike and work down, rather than the bottom and work up.

Cool. Thanks for taking us along.

The white flowers are definately liatris, I have some in my butterfly garden. I LOVE Joe-Pye weed! Ours was over six feet tall and full of monarchs last year. The great things with wildflowers is that you can practise the "benign neglect" style of gardening with them.

We had some Sanford and Son in the way-back corner of our yard. We're slowly burning through it. :D
I replanted my mom's hostas in my front garden and they looked good for a little while, but now the big strong leaves are flimsy and full of holes! Teh intarwebs suggests it might be slugs, snails or cutworm. Also, my pretty new lavender died! I asked google and apparently our horribly soggy summer is the culprit.

I think martian77 is right about the liatris. I love a garden filled with interesting things. thanks for that.
I don't think any of us should compare ourselves to Norma where gardening is concerned. (the kale was sad, but it likes cool weather so there is still hope)
