november 7, 07

This was the first very cold day where the cold morning temperature didn't give way to a warm afternoon. I spent most of the day working at home with my pyjama pants on underneath my dress, and had a really nice pair of orangey-red tights picked out to change into to go out to my 5:30 meeting. But when the time to leave the house rolled around, I couldn't bear to take the pyjamas off, as I'd been cold for a few days with my inadequate short-sleeved sweaters. So I decided to keep them on and be warm. Later still I had to go down to the undergraduate print studio to monitor the place from 8 to 10 p.m., and it was so cold that I broke down and wore a heavy curling sweater that I didn't make myself. I only have one really warm sweater, the Mariah sweater, and at the time I thought I'd lost it (she's since been found).

I can see that warmth is really going to be a problem (assuming it ever really gets cold here; this week we're back to balmy days, and walking home this evening I was too hot and had to remove my sweater). I've been wearing leggings under the shorter dresses and knee socks or tights under the longer ones, but when winter comes for real I'll want to wear thick tights or leggings every day. The dresses are so lightweight that they ride up when worn with tights and leggings, and the dress fabrics are also not enough to keep me warm. I'm thinking I'll make some longer underskirts to wear that will keep my legs warm beneath my dress and also be of heavy enough fabric that they won't get hung up on my tights. I'm going to knit up some large panels of lightweight wool and felt them to cut and sew some of these skirts. But for now I'm just going to dig out whatever corduroy and twill I have here and whip up a few out of those to tide me over.
