I decided to give dress #3 a makeover and replace its bodice so it would look the same as the others (ie, like an apron). I used scraps from the original fabric the dress was made of, so in this state you can see the difference between the dress when it started and the dress with thirteen layers of ink.

I did it again, forgetting to photograph the dress before printing it again. I don't even have being out of the studio and having my routine disrupted as an excuse this time; the dress was right there in the pile with the others, and I thought I'd photographed them all.

I'm planning to put together a book for each dress as part of the museum installation, and I'm not sure yet what to do about the states that don't have photos. Sketches? Empty dotted outlines? That seems a bit lame. Torn out pages would be better, maybe.

The camera will take ten continuous shots, and the first one often looks like this as I press the shutter and dash to my spot. I like the way some of these look: nothing but the dress, or part of the dress, and blurry movement. I'm going to try to start including images of the dresses in less controlled, less contrived situations, so I'll start by posting some of the daily outtakes.

It's funny, I felt like I was cheating by wearing trousers under my dress, even though I never said I wouldn't. I was having an uncomfortable day and just felt that my old blue cords would make it all better. Later on in the following week, during which I was sick as a dog, I wore trousers two more times. I don't know why I continue to feel as though I broke a rule.

The printing at home completely threw off my routine, and so I made a big mistake: I didn't photograph the dress at this stage before printing it again. To make matters worse, while wearing it I only photographed it with the sweater over it. The new colour is the red that you can see down at the bottom, the same as the dress from the day before.

This is the first of the dresses printed at home, by hand, kneeling on the floor. I only have a few inks at home and didn't have any of the modifiers I like to use, and couldn't get the can of white open (I managed that by the next printing). For these first ones, I printed a red straight out of the can that barely showed up on some of the dresses. some of the dress photos from this period look pretty shabby, as there isn't nearly as much light in my dining room as there is in the studio.

Third of three new dresses sewn before going home for the winter holiday. Having to print at home in a makeshift space (the front room floor, rolling ink out on the glass top of a table my Uncle Jack made years ago and rubbing the woodblocks by hand with a wooden spoon), my ritual is so disrupted that I haven't always been remembering what order I've done things in. I'd begun the second printing on this dress before realizing I never photographed the first state, so I can only show the front (the back was already printed).
